PROJECTS FROM THE 2000s

Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust, Stratford upon Avon, UK 2009

Introductory themed displays of medieval Stratford, leading to a reveal of one of the Shakespeare Folios and various artefacts.

Norsk BreMuseum (Glacier Museum), Fjaerland, Norway 2007

The most challenging of spatial jobs. The Norwegian Glacier Museum tells the story of the creation of Earth’s climate and the changes being wrought by Global Warming. Working alongside professors of climatology and volcanologists, I had to fit ground-breaking (literally) scenes into a circular, conical space created by one of Norway’s foremost architects. Fortunately I enjoy spatial challenges! Full of projections, sound, special effects, scenic displays and factual information, it involves flowing magma, a tertiary forest and the last ice age – amongst other things… Best, however, as a passionate traveller, was scripting a final message for one of my heroes, David Attenborough.

Newarke Houses Museum, Leicester, UK 2007

Re-interpreting Victorian shops into post WW2 shops, also a walk-through WW1 trench, 50s cinema and draper’s shop.

Hafnarfjordur Museum, Iceland 2005

Recreation of a full scale Nissen hut with figures. This was built in a Yorkshire barn and we had five days to construct and dress it in Iceland – and did it in three, after the container was ‘lost’ in the Reykjavik docks!

Sir John Moore Foundation, Derbyshire, UK 2003

Re-interpreting a fine Sir Christopher Wren building back to its condition as a Victorian school, including a classroom, headmaster’s room, dormitory and other fully dressed heritage rooms, under the beady, protective eyes of English Heritage.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Virginia, USA 1999

A wonderful evocation of the days between the death and funeral of America’s best-loved superhero. I led this project from originating the script and concept, through to building the scenery and installing the displays at North America’s most visited heritage house. It was a real privilege to do this project, and having hit both the most well known heritage houses in USA and UK (with Shakespeare’s house at Stratford) seems significant!
