What’s it all About?

Museums should be educating, intriguing, stimulating – and preferably fun.

I think of what I do as ‘Storytelling in 3D’ – immersive museum exhibits that form a springboard for audiences’ imaginations, while maintaining academic integrity. My work often involves specially made film, sound effects, mechanical effects, copious props and even sculpted characters. But any or all of these are there to serve the story.

Everything from historic gaols, medieval forests, General Washington’s bedroom, multi-scale dioramas, and pirate ships to the centre of the earth, the bottom of the sea, the last Ice Age and the battlefields of Europe and America.

At the heart of all my work is telling stories.

Hands-on Approach

I have worked with spaces from the grand to the awkward and with budgets from tiny to generous.

Most of my projects have been very hands-on jobs, directing creative crews with ‘real’ materials and museum collections, or with props from accurate academic research. I am involved in all aspects of development, from conceptual planning to final hand-over, working with clients and academics, and creative teams.

Putting the Story Into History

I’m happy to get stuck in and get my hands dirty too! This way of working is economical and creative. Economy comes by building only what will be seen and focusing the money where it has most visual impact. Creativity comes from a flexible approach and a designer who can adapt and elaborate as opportunities arise. The sets often grow in an organic fashion, giving results that fit comfortably and naturally into their spaces and tell vivid visual stories.
